Cayman Brac To Receive New Community Park
The Cayman Islands Ministry of District Administration, Works, Lands and Agriculture has partnered with Dart Cayman to provide a new community park for the larger of the two Sister Islands.
The park will be sited at Watering Place, next to the Sisters Islands Affordable Housing Development Corporation’s housing community in Cayman Brac. It will be developed on a little more than an acre of land and will feature an amphitheatre, half basketball court, an 8-foot walking path along the perimeter, cabanas, grilling areas, restrooms and playground equipment. The landscaping will feature coastal indigenous plants.
Dart Cayman has already helped create several community parks throughout all five districts in Grand Cayman, and has turned its attention to developing similar facilities in the Sister Islands.
Cayman Islands Deputy Premier Juliana O’Connor-Connolly said she was ecstatic that Dart Cayman had agreed to build a community park in Cayman Brac.
“Brackers have a strong sense of community and they like open spaces where families can get together. This park will provide another avenue for family cohesiveness,” she said.
Ken Hydes, vice president of place management and experiences for Dart Realty (Cayman), said, “Over the past years, and in partnership with successive governments, we’ve created community parks in East End, North Side, George Town, Bodden Town and West Bay, and we’re pleased to now focus our efforts on the Sister Islands and Cayman Brac. We’d like to thank the deputy premier for helping us to get this Growing Communities project off the ground.”
Future plans include a 25-metre pool and an area for portable bleachers to host local swim meets. Construction is expected to start in November, subject to the necessary construction permits being in place.
