Cayman Islands to witness a Bolt of lightening

Usain Bolt will run his first 100 metres of 2013 in Grand Cayman next week.

Arguably he is the most charismatic individual in the history of sport, but there are no doubts that he is the fastest. He will race in the Cayman Invitational at the Truman Bodden Sports Complex on 8 May.

• He currently holds many records and firsts among them are:

• The 26-year-old Jamaican holds the world record in the 100m in 9.58 seconds, 200m in 19.19 seconds and 4x100m relay in 36.84 seconds.

• He is the first in Olympic history to win the 100m and 200m in record times and to do the double in consecutive Olympic Games.

• He is also the first to gain three world records in a single Olympics.

• Bolt is also the first to win six golds in Olympic sprint events. He has won 30 gold medals representing Jamaica.

• He has been IAAF Male Athlete of the Year four times and is a three-time recipient of the Laureus Sportsman of the Year Award.

Last year, in his opening appearance at 100m, Bolt was clocked at 9.82 seconds. Can he better that result at the Cayman Invitational?

Bolt said: “I’m looking forward to running in Cayman, it will be my first 100m of the season and my first time to run in Cayman.”

Meet organiser Cydonie Mothersill-Stephens said:  “It’s a great pleasure and honour having him grace our shores and I hope that the people of the Cayman Islands will come out and show him Cayman-style love and support.”

Bolt’s coach, Glen Mills, said that he, too, is looking forward to the Cayman Invitational because it is a crucial part his preparations for the World Championships in Moscow in August.

Also at the meet will be the world’s fastest woman, Carmelita Jeter, who also runs in the 100m.
