Cayman Passes New Law On Electric Cars
The new Traffic Law, which is expected to take effect this month, introduces the legal means by which electric cars can be driven on Cayman’s roads.
Speaking on behalf of the Premier at last Thursday’s inaugural Electric Auto Show, Hon Mike Adam, Minister of Community Affairs and Housing made the announcement about the approval of electric cars for local roads.
John Felder, CEO of Cayman Automotive, who has been leading the charge for electric vehicles on the island for many years, welcomed this.
“I have been riding an emotional high since Minister Mike Adam made the historic announcement on Thursday, 30 August,” Mr. Felder subsequently stated.
“Petroleum is a limited resource, a vexing source of price spikes, geopolitical instability and environmental disasters of epic proportions. Globally, demand for personal transportation is increasing, while reserves are decreasing. Not only is petroleum a diminishing resource, but it is also a significant source of Greenhouse gas emissions,” he added.
The new traffic law, which was approved in the house last November, also introduces new definitions as such “electrically powered vehicle”. The definition of “motor vehicle” has been changed. Under the Traffic Law (2003 Revision), a motor vehicle was defined as any mechanically propelled vehicle manufactured or adapted for use on roads. This definition has been reworded to add electric vehicles for general road use.
Crown World welcomes the new traffic law as another important step towards the protection and conservation of the Cayman ecology that works in tandem with our own endeavors following the introduction of our eco-friendly developments on Cayman Brac and Little Cayman.
