Discover the Cayman Islands
On this day 10th May 1503, four ships under the captaincy of Christopher Columbus were blown off-course by strong easterly winds but were rescued when they happened upon a previously unchartered island group.
The islands were given the name Las Tortugas after the abundance of sea turtles sighted in the area but a few years later the more familiar name of Caymanas was chosen and has stuck ever since.
The Cayman Islands have gone on to become one of the most famous and important financial centres in the world. The creation of the banking and trust laws has laid the foundation for the modern banking and financial services industry, which still exist today.
As a British Overseas Territory, the Cayman Islands enjoy political stability under a government committed to supporting the islands’ strong economy and operating under British Common Law. The absence of tax on non-residency makes this one of the most financially advantageous investment destinations in the world.
And so, with the world’s economy still in uncertain waters it is comforting to know that the Cayman Islands can still offer a safe harbour to all investors whose plans have been blown off-course.
