Multi million dollar redevelopment plans for Cayman Islands Spotts Jetty
Planning Authority considers $3.2 million improvements to Spotts Jetty
In another story that is sure to intrigue those with an eye for investments in Caribbean land, Crown World (www.crownworld.com) reports that the Central Planning Authority of the Cayman Islands is today (1 Feb) set to consider a Cayman Islands’ Port Authority application to redevelop Spotts Jetty, as part of a $3.2 million project.
The undertaking is part of negotiations between the China Harbour Engineering Company and the government, with plans also being in place for a cruise dock near Turtle Farm in West Bay and cruise berthing in George Town. These plans are just the latest in a string of proposed improvements and developments that prove the Cayman Islands are continually evolving, led by a forward-thinking and proactive government.
In its analysis of the application, the Planning Department informed those looking to buy land in Cayman Islands that the project consisted of a one-storey cruise ship passenger terminal, which in turn comprises of a security office, departure security checkpoint, Customs/Immigration and Department of Tourism help desk. Other elements of the scheme, according to the report, include a central pedestrian courtyard and walkway, wooden shade trellises, a drive thru/park area for taxis and buses, 10 vendor cabanas and four restroom buildings.
OA+D Architects is responsible for the ambitious plans to improve Spotts Jetty, and had submitted them for planning review on 20 December. Although those with land investments in Grand Cayman were able to make comments about the scheme to the Planning Department, the application stated that there were no objections, evidence of the general support from Islanders to such renovations and improvements.
Negotiations with China Harbour about the project are being led by the ministerial councillor with responsibility for housing, e-government, e-business and the port, the George Town MLA Elliot Solomon. Mr Solomon has expressed hopes that by mid-to-late February, the final framework agreement will be signed, swiftly followed by the work on Spotts, which will continue for eight months.
